About Us:

Our Origins , Identity and Mission…..

Angel Pets Veterinary Hospice was founded in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 2018 with a singular purpose:

to provide compassionate, ethical, and deeply personalized end-of-life care for pets and the families who cherish them.

We are a privately owned, women-owned, community-rooted practice built on the belief that how we care for pets in their final chapter matters — not only medically, but emotionally, ethically, and relationally.

At our core, we are an in-home hospice and euthanasia service. But more than that, we are partners to families navigating one of the most difficult decisions they will ever make.

Meeting Families Where They Are

We are proud to offer unrushed, compassionate, all-encompassing care in the comfort of our patients’ homes — and in the presence of the families who love them.

We quite literally meet families where they are:

  • In their living rooms.
  • On their back porches.
  • On their favorite dog beds.
  • On beach towels overlooking the Chesapeake Bay or Potomac River
  • In the quiet spaces where memories were made.

But we also meet them where they are emotionally.

Some families call us when they are certain it is time.

Others reach out because they are unsure.

Many are exhausted, overwhelmed, grieving in advance, or carrying guilt.

Our role is not simply to perform a medical procedure.

Our role is to guide, educate, support, and walk beside families — whether that means:

  • Providing an in-home euthanasia appointment with dignity and peace,
  • Or embarking on a palliative or hospice approach focused on comfort, pain management, environmental modifications, and quality-of-life monitoring.

Hospice care is not a single appointment.

It is a partnership.

We provide resources, educational tools, quality-of-life assessments, and individualized guidance so families can make informed, thoughtful decisions rooted in love — not fear.

Every case is tailored.

Every family is different.

Every goodbye is sacred.

Community Based , NON-Corporate Approach

Angel Pets is rooted in Virginia communities. We are not a corporate call center operating across state lines. Our support team understands the neighborhoods, the traffic patterns, the weather realities, the emergency access limitations, and the local veterinary ecosystem.

We know:

  • How snow and ice impact rural driveways.
  • What a hurricane warning means for coastal families.
  • How Beltway traffic alters appointment timing.
  • Which emergency hospitals are truly accessible at 2 AM.

This local knowledge allows us to deliver care that is realistic, grounded, and responsive.

Our families are not numbers in a queue.

They are our neighbors.

And our doctors are not interchangeable providers — they are known, trusted, community-centered professionals who carry the emotional weight of this work with intention and integrity.

Meet our Team

Two Virginian Regions, One Mission:

Expansion with Intention: Northern Virginia

Our growth into Northern Virginia was not driven by scale for scale’s sake.

It was driven by need.

As corporate end-of-life models continue to expand, we recognized a growing demand for a privately owned, community-centered, sustainable hospice practice that prioritizes individualized care over volume metrics.

Expanding into Northern Virginia allows us to:

  • Preserve a non-corporate alternative.
  • Offer locally grounded care in a region with increasing demand.
  • Maintain the same philosophy of sustainability and compassion.
  • Protect the integrity of hospice medicine as relationship-based, not transaction-based.

Though we now operate in multiple regions, our mission remains unified:

One philosophy.

Multiple communities.

The same commitment to dignity, sustainability, and thoughtful care.

Dr. Melanie Cohen , owner and founder of Angel Pets in Virginia.

Dear families,

One of the questions we are most often asked is how we do this work. The truth is, it has never felt like work—it is a calling. It is a profound privilege to be invited into such meaningful moments, and one that I hold with deep respect and gratitude.

We are proud to be a Virginia-based, privately owned practice, rooted in the communities we serve and committed to being a trusted source of guidance, support, and compassion. Our greatest strength is our team—individuals who bring both clinical excellence and genuine heart to every family they meet.

It is especially meaningful to now extend our care to Northern Virginia, a place that holds personal significance from my time there as a military spouse. To continue this work in a community that once felt like home is truly an honor.

Warmly,

Dr. Mel
