“It’s Different When Its One of Your Own…. “
“I coach and counsel folks every single day.. I just went through this with my own pet in December, so even knowing what is best and what I would advise folks facing the same, all sense of what is right or wrong went out the window. Sometimes the decision we ultimately make is selfless and the last act of love we can show our pet. Was I at peace with myself, no way… Did I do what was best for my baby, absolutely.. That I can absolutely live with, especially seeing the pain she was in. I hope that helps even just a little.” Gina Highfield
Gina and I both have been through the losses of our own furkids, and while we are surrounded with and help guide families through anticipatory grief and loss daily, following your own advise can be very difficult. Some people ask ” Does this ever get easier?” The answer is : ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Although upon adoption of a pet, we know the day will come that we will face losing him/her. We know their lifespans are a fraction of ours, but knowledge doesn’t ease the pain of loss. Nor does their loss erase the years of joy, love and completeness that they brought to our lives.
Decisions are impossibles, but if they are based with compassion and are completely selfless….then no matter the outcome- they were based from the heart and need never be questioned or regretted.
